General Topic Area (and why you chose it):

I have chosen to study blog sites like Tumblr and Blogspot and do my Wiki page on the concept of “blogging” because I am pretty comfortable with and knowledgeable on the subject. I also believe that the communication aspect of blogging is fairly obvious.

How is this topic is related to communication?

Blogs are quite different from regular websites in that they function and are maintained on a much more personal basis. Most blogs are interactive and allow their users to leave comments and even message each other via widgets on the blogs, and it is this interactivity between the owner of the blog and the blogs viewers that distinguishes them from your typical websites.

There are four different types of blogging: 1) Personal Blogs which is used to communicate one persons personal thought/feelings on any subject, 2) Political Blogs which alsos candidates to communicate with citizens on a more personal level, and 3) Organization Blogs which can serve and a public relations tool for organizations or businesses. 4). Educational Blogging – Learning through interaction online.

Blogging is related to communication in that blogs have a “human voice”, and this voice is achieved through blogs open dialog, welcoming conversational communication, and feedback. Blogging is also related to communication in that it allows for an exchange of dialogue, thoughts, messages, signs, etc. between two people/ one person and a group of people. As you can see from the different kinds of blogging listed above blogging can help the communication for four very different demographics.

Pew Internet and American Life study you plan to Reference

Include full APA style reference and 100 word minimum description of the study and how it relates to your project.

The article entitled “Bloggers” from the Pew Internet and American Life discusses how blogging is bringing new voices to the online world. The article speaks on a survey a telephone survey of a nationally-representative sample of bloggers that have found that blogging is inspiring a new group of writers and creators to share their voices with the world. This article also provides plenty of facts and statistics on who is blogging (i.e. specific demographics) and how and why they blog. This article and the information is provides relates to my project in showing how numerous demographics are using blogging in order to communicate to the world.

List of Websites you plan to visit to get Information

1). http://jcmc.indiana.edu/vol11/issue2/kelleher.html

The study “Organizational Blogs and the Human Voice: Relational Strategies and Relational Outcomes” by Tom Kelleher and Barbara M. Miller defines and tests the operational definitions of the three main types of blogs: 1) Personal blogs, 2) Political blogs, and 3) Organizational blogs. This study provides research questions on the subject as well as tests hypotheses that evaluate the potential advantages of organization blogs over tradition Websites. The article also touches on the “conversation human voice” and the relational outcomes like trust, satisfaction, control mutuality, and commitment that is provided and achieved through blog sites and the act of blogging.

2). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blog

The Wikipedia page for blogging provides a definition for “blog” and “blogging” as wells as helps distinguish blogs from typical websites. Wikipedia is helpful in that it provides summaries of the history of blogs, including its origins, rise in popularity, political impact, and mainstream popularity. It also touches on the types of blogs and the legal and social consequences of blogging including: defamation of liability, employment, political dangers, personal safety, and behavior. There are many different types of blogs, differeing not only in the typoe of content, but also in the way that the content is delivered or written and Wikipedia gives the types (Personal blogs, corporate and organization blogs, by genre, by media type, and by device) of blogging as well as the cataloging of blogging (The Blogosphere, BlogDay, Blog search engines, Blogging communities and directories, and Blogging and advertisting).

3). http://www.myuniversalfacts.com/2006/08/definition-and-purpose-of-blog-what-is.html

This site was in particularly helpful in defining what exactly is a blog, defining it’s different uses and the different tools on a blog website, and describing what the differences are between a blog site and a website. The sites also defines some important key terms like: Static vs. dynamic webpages, visitor traffic, ease of starting a site, interaction with visitors, communication approach format, date and time stamped, social community site, thought and lastly, thought provoking reading. And the end of the article also discusses how you can change the format or the template to your likings

Blau, Ina., Mor, Nili., & Neuthal, Tami. (2009) Promoting Interpersonal and Group Interactions Using Blogs in Higher Education Interdisciplinary Journal of E-Learning and Learning Objects 5. 234-241

Promoting Interpersonal and Group Interactions Using Blogs in Higher Education by Ina Blau, Nili Mor, and Tami Neuthal explores the interpersonal and group interactions in blogs and investigates the relations between the feeling nearness perceived via posts and interpersonal blogger-reader interactions in education blogs. The article does so by studying a group of 25 graduate students ages 27-53. This article is relates to my research in that it explores the ways in which blogs (i.e. educational blogs) get students to interact with one another via blog sites. One of the major takeaways from this study is their conclusion that students find blogs sites most helpful and use blogsites more when they feel a sense of nearness to their classmate/the owner of the blog (this was achieved by feedback). The study is helpful to my research in that it also compares the peer group interactions in education blogs to wiki group interactions.

Very cool, Erica. You are the first one to have anything up!At least that I've seen, and I've been looking, so congrats on that. Your wiki topic is a good one. I will be taking the Communication 131P, 'New Media You Media'course over the summer. It deals with alot with blogging, which I am so far unfamiliare with, so your page will be an interesting one for me to keep an eye on. It should help me get up to speed with the goings-on of current bloggers and the like, so thank you.
