General Topic Area (and why you chose it):

I have chosen to study blog sites like Tumblr and Blogspot and do my Wiki page on the concept of “blogging” because I am pretty comfortable with and knowledgeable on the subject. I also believe that the communication aspect of blogging is fairly obvious.

How is this topic is related to communication?

Blogs are quite different from regular websites in that they function and are maintained on a much more personal basis. Most blogs are interactive and allow their users to leave comments and even message each other via widgets on the blogs, and it is this interactivity between the owner of the blog and the blogs viewers that distinguishes them from your typical websites.

There are four different types of blogging: 1) Personal Blogs which is used to communicate one persons personal thought/feelings on any subject, 2) Political Blogs which alsos candidates to communicate with citizens on a more personal level, and 3) Organization Blogs which can serve and a public relations tool for organizations or businesses. 4). Educational Blogging – Learning through interaction online.

Blogging is related to communication in that blogs have a “human voice”, and this voice is achieved through blogs open dialog, welcoming conversational communication, and feedback. Blogging is also related to communication in that it allows for an exchange of dialogue, thoughts, messages, signs, etc. between two people/ one person and a group of people. As you can see from the different kinds of blogging listed above blogging can help the communication for four very different demographics.

The Wikipedia page for blogging provides a definition for “blog” and “blogging” as wells as helps distinguish blogs from typical websites. Wikipedia is helpful in that it provides summaries of the history of blogs, including its origins, rise in popularity, political impact, and mainstream popularity. It also touches on the types of blogs and the legal and social consequences of blogging including: defamation of liability, employment, political dangers, personal safety, and behavior. There are many different types of blogs, differeing not only in the typoe of content, but also in the way that the content is delivered or written and Wikipedia gives the types (Personal blogs, corporate and organization blogs, by genre, by media type, and by device) of blogging as well as the cataloging of blogging (The Blogosphere, BlogDay, Blog search engines, Blogging communities and directories, and Blogging and advertisting).

Blau, Ina., Mor, Nili., & Neuthal, Tami. (2009) Promoting Interpersonal and Group Interactions Using Blogs in Higher Education Interdisciplinary Journal of E-Learning and Learning Objects 5. 234-241

Promoting Interpersonal and Group Interactions Using Blogs in Higher Education by Ina Blau, Nili Mor, and Tami Neuthal explores the interpersonal and group interactions in blogs and investigates the relations between the feeling nearness perceived via posts and interpersonal blogger-reader interactions in education blogs. The article does so by studying a group of 25 graduate students ages 27-53. This article is relates to my research in that it explores the ways in which blogs (i.e. educational blogs) get students to interact with one another via blog sites. One of the major takeaways from this study is their conclusion that students find blogs sites most helpful and use blogsites more when they feel a sense of nearness to their classmate/the owner of the blog (this was achieved by feedback). The study is helpful to my research in that it also compares the peer group interactions in education blogs to wiki group interactions.
