Castell's Updates

Page history last edited by ted.coopman@... 13 years, 5 months ago

The Castells text is dated by internet standards, but it still remains the best general overview of the internet, it's history, culture, and economic base out there. It is also very readable (if dry at times) for a textbook.

This page updates the outdated statistical information in much of Castells. It was compiled by the Fall 2009 class. The name of the student who updated in below each entry.

If you want to earn some extra credit (10 pts. each), find the information that still needs to be updated (* below) and email the instructor. It must be complete and from a reliable source.

p. 64 How many billions of dollars is traded by U.S. business over the internet?

E-commerce sales grew by 13% in 2008 for a total of $141.3 billion, according to a news report from Forrester Research Inc. However, as a percentage of total US retail sales, e-commerce volume in 2008 was flat compared to 2007 at 5%.

P. 73 What are the current market shares of the top 3 cell phone hand set makers?

Nokia Corp (NOK)  15.70

Samsung Electronics (SSNLF) : 440.9174

LG Electronics (LGLD-GB:London) :  22.05

For the top-selling cell phone makers in 2009, I used the source http://techcrunchies.com/worldwide-mobile-phone-shipment-in-2009-top-5-ranking-by-handset-manufacturer/  It seemed credible to me because the entire site focuses on internet related statistics.

For the market shares values, I used http://data.cnbc.com/quotes .  This was credible because I was familiar with CNBC and it provides up-to-the-minute information on stocks.

p. 78 What is the current value of the NASDAQ index?

Current value :  2132.86

This seemed to be a credible source to me because it showed exact information of market activity prior to yesterday’s close.

p. 118 Castells states that at the time of publication, email accounts for 85% of internet usage (keep in mind this is not volume of bandwidth – like bit torrent – but what people use the internet for.). What is the #1 use of the internet?

Sherry

63% of US households have a broadband Internet connection (Forrester Research)

What is the average speed (upload and download speeds) of US broadband?

I found an article from February 2010, which states that "the average broadband download speed in the U.S. is now 7.12 megabits per second, while the average upload speed is 2.42Mbps." According to the article, broadband speeds rose significantly in 2009.

20% is the current number because:

Eighty percent of the respondents consider it stealing to download music for free without the copyright holder's permission, and 92 percent say they've never done it, according to the poll conducted for The Associated Press and Rolling Stone magazine.

Is most internet traffic still routed through the US? How much?

Kelly

No, The US doesn't have the largest Internet flow. Internet traffic is increasingly flowing around the United States, which may have intelligence — and conceivably military — consequences.

Andrew M. Odlyzko, a professor at the University of Minnesota who tracks the growth of the global Internet, added, “We discovered the Internet, but we couldn’t keep it a secret.” While the United States carried 70 percent of the world’s Internet traffic a decade ago, he estimates that portion has fallen to about 25 percent.
