Course Orientation Workshop

Page history last edited by ted.coopman@... 13 years, 2 months ago

Directions:

This workshop consists of a self-paced slide show, tasks for you to complete and bring to class, as well as links and basic information below. The slides are available in Keynote and PDFs (PDFs are accessible for screen readers). These slides are plain and designed to download fast and simply provide you with information you need for this course.

Once you have looked over these slides, you need to make at least one comment below (100 word minimum) that directly address the slides content for workshop credit, ask questions, etc.

While you are not quizzed on this workshop, you are responsible for using this information for your course projects. This is stuff you need to know. Refer back to these slides.

This workshop is to orient you to the courses policies and procedures. Think of it as the instruction manual for the course. After completing this workshop, you need to go to the course Desite2Learn site to take the Course Orientation Workshop quiz. This quiz is for extra credit and also familiarizes you with the D2L assessment system and the way I design quizzes. As with all quizzes, you may refer to this workshop as you take the quiz – although like all quizzes it is timed.

This will be my second consecutive class with Dr. Coopman and I am looking forward to it. I previously took Comm 156I and the basic layout of the class is generally the same with some minor changes. The front loading format of the class seems tough at the start but it really pays off in the end. I really like the new style of quiz opening dates. I think having all of them open at the beginning of the class is a great idea. The workshops are very helpful every week and the discuss and report sessions really help with doing the quizzes. This class seems very promising and I am looking forward to getting started!

Oops. Clearly, I was supposed to type before clicking the "Add comment" button. Live n learn I guess.
So I'm super excited to be at SJSU! Today was my first day, as I'm an incoming transfer student with an A.A. in Comm Studies from Gavilan College in Gilroy, where I live. I have to say I impressed with the organization of this course. I should also say that I'm a little nervous about this much 'wiki' and D2L. Never was much of a fan wikipedia in the first place, but I am starting to get a sense of it's advantages. And the whole D2L thing is alien to me (transfer student, obviously) but I'm sure I'll be fine once I get my feet wet.
Lastly, I would like to say thanks to Dr. Coopman for finding a very readable (at least so far), and also importantly, a very affordable text for this course.
Looking forward to a great semster with you all, Jay Barton

At first I was nervous to take this course. I'm also in 151i with Dr. Ted Coopman and thought, "What have I got myself into?"
This course is going be a challenge but very fun it seems to be. Some of my friends said you were going to be very hard or very easy. Not so sure on the easy part. I just want to thank you again for the "mistake quiz" I had no idea what the answers could have been. And thank you very much for the small text book that only cost $24 bucks.

I took 156I from Prof. Coopman a year ago, and now I’m taking two courses from him for my final semester. Prof. Coopman puts a lot of time into structuring his courses and he really makes it so the students learn a lot in a small amount of time. The structure gives focus and direction so we (the students) can “work our butts off” without wasting time asking about word counts and due dates. The orientation workshops are essential in preparing the student for the pace of the course and the detail with which they are expected to complete assignments.

This is my second COMM class, I am also taking Intro to Comm and I am excited to be taking this major. I have no clue what I will be doing with this in my future but I hope to be successful with whatever I do. I am looking forward to having Prof. Coopman as my professor because he is very organized and so am I and love having organized Professors. This workshop was very descriptive and I somewhat liked that, although it took some time to get through. I admit this class will be challenging and I like to challenge myself, I just hope I don't die during the process.

i am excited to take this class too, but i am very skeptical about how the class will be running because since this is pretty much new to me, i am a bit lost. i hope this is not going to be an excuse for me to not do well. i hope, as Zanel said, i don't die during the process either.

This is my first class with Dr. Coopman. When I initially read the email on how this class was going to work, I was a bit intimidated. But, I like how the work is done at home, and how the quizzes are all online. I’m also looking forward to the group meetings to discuss the readings. I really like how everything in this class is laid out rite there for you, so you know exactly what you’re doing and how you need to do it. I am very excited about this class and can’t wait to see how it all works out.

This is also my first time taking a class with Dr. Coopman. I am excited for the class and feel a little more at ease after reading through the workshop. I know this class will be challenging for me, especially in the beginning, but I know that if I continue to work hard that I will do just fine and learn a lot. Dr. Coopman seems like an extremely organized professor and I can tell from a few other previous comments from students above who have taken his classes before feel that this course is very structured and prepares us to be successful. I like how the quizzes are open so that I can work ahead. I'm looking forward to a great semester full of learning.

I am Communications focus, not major but I am excited to take this course. Reading the orientation workshop I see it will be a lot of work but it will be beneficial in the long run to have a better understanding and even better work ethic. The advice on the workshop under quizzes I found very helpful, it will be good to organize notes and be fully prepared before each quiz. I hope I can stay on top of the readings, workshops, and quizzes.

This whole wiki and D2L stuff is pretty new to me and at first it was a bit confusing but now I'm actually really glad that a lot of my Prof. are using this site as it's proving to be pretty helpful with organization. I'm excited for COMM 181F w Prof. Coopman he seems very knowledgeable on the subject and very easy to talk to.

I am a communications major, but this is my first class with Professor Coopman. So far the class seems to be really structured and easy to follow which is nice. Also the subject matter is something relevant and interesting so it won't be too bad of a course. It's nice that there are the hints on the quizzes for where you can find the answers in the reading. I had a course where the quiz questions appeared to be done at random.

This is my minor, and first class with Dr. Coopman. The class seems a bit different, however much more interactive than most of classes. I am still adjusting to the wiki page and guiding through it. Dr. Coopman seems to be very easy to talk with and willing to lend a hand to students, which is def. a plus. The class seems to be something I can learn a lot in as far as communications as a whole. I look forward to doing well on the quizzes and getting a good grade in the class.

I am a communications major and this is my first class with Dr. Coopman. I signed up for this course because it was very interesting to me and I can tie it into the other communications class I'm taking that also deals with internet communication. I was kind of nervous about this course the first day and hearing about all the reading we have to do, but after reading through the syllabus and course origination workshop I'm more at ease. I like the schedule this course has and the Tuesday discussions of the readings. Look forward to this semester, Andrew Rodriguez.

Same as Mark, this is my second class with Professor Coopman. I took his qualitative research methods class and loved it. The best part about the class, which I found to be extremely similar to the layout of this class, was the busy work in the beginning of the semester. Yes in the beginning there is a lot of tedious work to be done but it pays off. It is all necessary work that needs to be learned, and will make the rest of the semester that much more easy. I am excited to see new workshops as well. They are probably one of the best, user friendly ways to learn something and actually get you engaged in trying it out. Looking forward to the spring semester.

I am Communication Studies Major and this is my fist class With Dr. Coopman. Although I am already overwhelmed with the amount of work that I have in this class as well as the others, I am not discouraged because I know that it will be nice not having a large amount of work at the end of the semester. I also love the fact that we do not have a final; who doesn't? Although I do not know Dr. Coopman well I fee like he wants the best for his students and is willing do al he can to help like having hints on quizzes and such. After reading over the syllabus, I like the way that he has the days set out and I think I will like the discuss and report sessions because it will help recap the reading and will also help with the quizzes. Although he does grade by the top 10% of his students I do not think that is going to be a problem as long as everyone stays on top of the work and comes to class like Dr. Coopman says.

I am a Communication Studies: Information Age minor and this is my first class with Professor Ted Coopman. I look forward to the challenge of this class as I believe that it is more than well worth it. I find the layout of the class intriguing as it seems like a mixture of an in/online class. Professor Coopman seems to be a very straight-forward, thoroughly knowledgeable, interesting and forthcoming instructor that works to help his students which is seldom seen on college campuses. It is truly nice to be taught by someone that has broken down his/her class to the most essential components only to build it up for improvement, restructuring and so forth. In my time here I have had two professors that have gone to such lengths even revamping their lecture to better instruct their students. For COMM 181F, I appreciate the introduction to the class in such a manner (wiki, course orientation workshop, d2l) and am excited to see what the class has in store for us!

It seems as if Coopman has this teaching thing down pretty well. The structure of this course, on first impression, can be quite intimidating and a bit discouraging to most students (who aim to do as little as possible). However, having already taken a course with Ted, I am aware of the benefits it poses and how the specific skill sets are translated into other courses in addition to professional applications. You can only truly understand the positive aspects of a course with Ted if you embrace it, and adhere to the process as best you can.
